Global Biopharma Helps Veterans Return to College and Rejoin the Workforce

WATERTOWN, MA – November 19, 2009 – (BUSINESS WIRE) – In honor of Veterans Day, Wolfe Laboratories, Inc. (WLI), a biopharmaceutical development services company, hosted a site visit for veterans involved in the Veterans Upward Bound (VUB) program to introduce career options in the life sciences industry and help to translate their military experience into a career in biopharma.

“It is so important that veterans who are planning to go to college see what kinds of opportunities are available in the science field,” said VUB Director Barry Brodsky. “We prepare veterans for college, and we are grateful to Wolfe Laboratories for allowing our students to visit their facility and talk with their employees about career opportunities.” Brodsky added, “It is events just like this that can have a life-changing effect on a student, and we look forward to a long relationship with this thriving business.”

Becoming involved with the VUB program was of particular interest to Wolfe Laboratories. Jose Torres, Wolfe’s Quality Assurance Director is a veteran himself, having served as a 3rd Ranger Battalion Army Sergeant. During the site visit at WLI’s facility, Mr. Torres immediately connected with students by sharing his service background and how he transitioned from the military into a career in science. Mr. Torres’ previous military experience provided living proof that war veterans can play a pivotal role in the biopharmaceutical industry. Students then attended a presentation by two of Wolfe’s leading scientists, Michael Frid and Verona Outerbridge, where they learned about the process of drug development through the discussion of scientific case study. Ms. Outerbridge has also been lending her scientific knowledge to the VUB program outside of WLI, currently serving as an instructor of general science classes at the University of Massachusetts Boston (UMass Boston).

UMass Boston is home to the only New England chapter of VUB, providing a unique opportunity for veterans of all ages to gain access to information about college and career awareness, acquire the academic skills required for entry into higher education, and obtain the equivalent of a high school diploma. Through the VUB program, veterans will develop their skills and knowledge and put both to use in the state's workforce.

With more than one-third of participants having been homeless veterans and others fresh from the battlefield, the VUB program and companies like Wolfe Laboratories continue to remain an important educational asset to veterans returning home from war.
